Τη Κυριακή 26/09/2010 ο Φυσιολατρικός Σύλλογος Ηρακλείου (ΦΥ.Σ.Η.) και ο Ορειβατικός Σύλλογος (ΕΟΣ) Λασιθίου διοργάνωσαν από κοινού εκδρομή στο Φαράγγι της Σαρακήνας.
Η είσοδος του Φαραγγιού είναι λίγο μετά το χωριό Μύθοι. Πρόκειται για ένα πολύ εντυπωσιακό φαράγγι. Το μήκος του φαραγγιού φτάνει το 1.5km και το πλάτος του κυμαίνεται μόλις μεταξύ 3 και 10 μέτρων. Τα τοιχώματα φτάνουν σε ύψος τα 150m, γεγονός που κάνει το στενό αυτό φαράγγι επιβλητικό. Είναι πλούσιο σε βλάστηση και πουλιά, ενώ ο Κρυοπόταμος τρέχει ολόκληρο το χρόνο σχηματίζοντας καταρράκτες και λιμνούλες.
Όταν περάσαμε το φαράγγι κάποια άτομα γύρισαν πίσω από το φαράγγι και άλλοι προτίμησαν να πάρουν τον χωματόδρομο και το δρόμο.
Συναντηθήκαμε στην είσοδο του φαραγγιού και με το λεωφορείο πήγαμε στα Τέρτσα, ένα πολύ μικρό χωριό που βρίσκεται 91km νοτιοανατολικά του Ηρακλείου και 54km νοτιοδυτικά του Αγίου Νικολάου, ανάμεσα στο Μύρτος και τη Ψαρή Φοράδα.

Saturday September 18th 2010, the Naturalist Club of Heraklio and the Mountaineering Club of Lassithi visited Sarakina Gorge and Tertsa.
The traditional village of Mythi or Mithi is located 16km west of Ierapetra. In a short distance from the village, the small Sarakina Gorge starts, which ends near the coastal village of Mirtos.
The length of the canyon reaches 1.5km and its width ranges from 3 to 10 meters, with only a few points exceeding that. The walls reach a height of 150m, making this narrow gorge very impressive. In the gorge, Kryopotamos river is flowing all over the year.
The locals call the gorge Sarantapihos. According to legend Sarantapihos, a giant (son of Zeus) stopped to drink water from a river. His long beard slashed the mountain in two parts and created the canyon.
The canyon is rich in vegetation, birds and gurgling water. This is a canyon with most of its length being accessible, with water, ponds and some climbing points.
We crossed the Gorge and then we split in two groups, one went back the same way and the other took the road till the entrance to Sarakina Gorge. Our bus was waiting for us there and took us to Tertsa.
Some 86 kilometres far from Heraklion at the Southeast and 58 kilometres western to Aghios Nicolaos, Tertsa is located, pebbly beach affected by the winds blowing in the area. Not organised and remote enbough, the beach doesn’t offer any facility for swimming apart from the crystal clear sea, isolation and bright sun. In the small settlement the visitor of the 21st century will take an idea of how life used to be in Crete some 3 decades ago, before the quick development and the invasion of mass tourism.
