During Divine Liturgy in Good Friday morning, it’s The Descent from the Cross or Deposition of Christ.
Epitaphios is made of wood. During the Holy Thursday night ladies are staying at the church to cry for Jesus death and decorate Epitaphios with fresh flowers and flowers from lemon tree. In the morning, before Divine Liturgy starts, it is placed into the church, a few meters in frond of the Cross.
While the Gospel of Mathew that talks about the decision of crucifying Jesus is read in the church and while the Gospel talks about Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus took Christ down from the cross after his crucifixion and put Him in his Grave. The pastor takes the body from the Cross and put it into a white sheet.
Then they take a piece of tissue that represents the body of Jesus and put it into Epitaphios. Lots of flowers are put on top of it and the Bible is put on top. Then the Service ends and people queue up to pay their respects to Jesus.
It is a tradition that soldiers come and stand besides Epitaphios like Romans put guards in frond of His Grave.
