Vai, is situated in the northeastern part of Crete about 25Km distance from Sitia.
There is beautiful valley formed by two hills where there are 5.000 palm trees approx. that end up in the golden beach. The landscape changes and becomes idyllic and tropical. This is the biggest natural palm trees forest in Europe and has a unique palm beach.
According to the myth, the palm trees grew after a visit of the Phoenicians, who threw the kernels of the dates. Therefore, Vai was named after the palm trees or laurels, as they are called.
It is prohibited to camp overnight within the grove, and is protected by fencing under the care of the Forestry Service. This palm beach grove is organised and has been awarded with the EU Blue Flag.
